Children are a powerhouse of energy and talent. They are sensitive, committed and can be very steadfast in their goals. That is the reason when children take up a task; they always manage to achieve the best results. This is perhaps where the concept of child activism came into being.
It reminds me of an exercise that kids in my locality took up. They decided to stop air pollution and make sure that no crackers were burst during festival times. The same kids who would often cry for crackers were now counseling adults about not bursting them. Finally, the kids had their way, and the entire locality stopped bursting them.
Certain characteristics amongst kids help them a lot. They are
Most importantly if they decide on something, they can go to any length. In fact, it can be interpreted as one of the earliest manifestations of human commitment. It exemplifies the ability to excel once you direct your energy towards it.
How Can You Encourage Child Activism?
You can encourage the concept of child activism in many simple ways. There are many different organizations which take in participation from children. You can even engage them in simple tasks like planting saplings in your locality or maintaining cleanliness. The core idea is about them understanding a cause and then going around implementing it.
The most important aspect is children take up their assignment and complete it in a focused manner. You can even assign roles like collecting their old books and distributing them amidst underprivileged children. As a parent, you can encourage your child by working along with them. Your presence also boosts their conviction. They start valuing the importance of what they are doing.
Fueling Curiosity for Knowledge Gathering
That brings us to an interesting crossroad. What really triggers child activism? Well, there could be many factors. They are very observant, they look around, but most importantly, they are curious. There is a ‘why’ in practically everything they see and do. So when they see a specially-abled person, they surely ask ‘why’. This is exactly where your parenting skills get tested. It is not a good idea to brush aside.
Let’s say they met a visually impaired person. You can explain to your child that they can’t see. Try introducing the thought that next time they should help them in crossing the road. Well, even that is child activism of sorts. It makes them sensitive about a cause and helps them take an action. You became a facilitator by simply satisfying their curiosity about something. This experience goes a long way in helping develop a child’s personality.
Help Children Develop Their Voice
The most important aspect is it helps them develop their own viewpoint. Children have a unique perspective. This kind of situations often helps them in voicing their opinion. Even if they are wrong, it is always a good idea to let your child voice it. In that way, they will get the confidence to see a situation, grasp it and form their own opinion. You can always correct them. But the simple fact that you heard them, often gives them confidence. It helps them move forward and take up the cause with a positive perspective.
Moreover, child activism helps your kid develop emotions like empathy and sympathy. Childhood is not just about toys and fun. It is also about building the blocks of a complete upbringing. Nothing is out of bounds for children. The question is how you approach the subject. If you convey it in the right fashion, you can even discuss drug addiction with a 7-year old. They will not just keep away from it, but also help many who are coping with it.
Activism Leads To Meaningful Engagement
Often during vacations and long breaks, children while away a lot of time in free play. Try involving them in community activity. Try introducing simple tasks like cleaning the beach or spending time with senior citizens. These are community work, but they also trigger a sense of activism. They understand the importance of taking up responsibility and doing their bit. In whatever small ways they help, it provides a unique sense of accomplishment for them.
Child activism can, therefore, play a crucial role in your kid’s overall personal development. In many ways, it triggers their curiosity and helps them achieve a sense of purpose. When they see their actions bearing fruit, it instills a sense of confidence in them.
Children enjoy the concept of working as a group and excelling as a team. It creates a balance of perception about world matters and their immediate neighborhood. They learn to appreciate their blessings and share happiness around. This is also a brilliant way to inculcate the concepts of compassion and care amongst children.
